Recently Professor Peter Gosh from the Australian-based research company Paradigm Biopharma has discovered the drug Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium (PPS) as an effective method of reducing and eliminating arthritis. Pentosan, which has been previously used to treat blood clots and UTI's, has shown good results in treating arthritis. 70% of patients from the first company-funded trial saw a significant reduction in arthritis-related pain. With the next phase of clinical trials beginning in the coming months, more will become known about the beneficial anti-inflammatory activities of Pentosan.
Currently it is understood the Pentosan promotes cartilage synthesis and prevents its breakdown, as well as increasing blood flow through the capillaries that serve cartilage cells themselves. PRP treatment has been combined with Pentosan for enhanced results especially when bone bruising is present. Dr Peter Lewis has been involved with Paradigm Biopharma for several years now. He has also been researching the role of Pentosan for the prevention and treatment of arthritis.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a viscosupplementation - a medical procedure during which lubricating fluid is injected into a joint. While traditionally used for healing wounds, burns and skin ulcers, (HA) is also a key fluid found in the synovial cavity. In patients with osteoarthritis, (HA) breaks down and is believed to be a contributing factor in stiffness and joint pain. An injection of (HA) will help restore these critical synovial fluids and alleviate pain.
Durolane, a transparent gel which contains high levels of (HA), has been used by our patients in conjunction with PRP treatment, showing positive results. Durolane varies from other (HA) products as it is produced without any animal-sourced materials, decreasing the risk of any immunological or anaphylactic reactions.
